Coffee Matcha Rose Latte

Difficulty: Beginner Prep Time 4 mins Total Time 4 mins
Best Season: Spring

Description

This latte is designed as more than a source of energy. It brings together carefully selected ingredients that support both stimulation and regulation within the body.

Where coffee typically activates the nervous system, the addition of matcha provides a more sustained and stable form of focus. In Ayurveda, herbs such as Terminalia arjuna (Arjuna) are traditionally used to support the heart and circulation, while Saraca indica (Ashoka) is known for its stabilising effect on the nervous system and its connection to the pelvic and emotional axis. Rose adds a cooling, soothing quality, helping to soften mental and emotional tension.

Rather than pushing the system, this combination works to create a more balanced response—supporting calm alertness, emotional steadiness, and gentle nourishment of rasa and ojas, the foundational tissues related to resilience and vitality.

This makes it a suitable daily ritual for those who seek clarity and energy without the typical peaks and crashes associated with stimulants.

Ingredients

Instructions

Method 1

  1. With milk foamer

    1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee.
    2. Add the milk to the foamer and start heating/frothing.
    3. In a separate cup, whisk the matcha, arjuna, and ashoka with a small amount of warm milk until smooth (this prevents clumping).
    4. Once the milk is ready, pour it over the mixture and stir well.
    5. Add the coffee and gently combine.
    6. Finish with rose (powder or rose water) and optional sweetener if desired.

This method creates a smoother texture and integrates the ingredients more evenly.

Method 2

  1. Without milk foamer

    1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee.
    2. Warm the milk gently in a saucepan (do not boil).
    3. In a cup, whisk the matcha, arjuna, and ashoka with a small amount of the warm milk until fully dissolved.
    4. Add the remaining milk and stir well.
    5. Pour in the coffee and mix.
    6. Add rose at the end and adjust sweetness if needed.

    Practical note

Pre-mixing the powders with a small amount of liquid is essential for a smooth result, especially when working with herbal powders.

Note

Contraindications & Cautions

While this latte uses gentle, traditionally applied ingredients, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Use with caution or avoid in the following situations:

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • Herbs such as Ashoka (Saraca indica) and Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) are not routinely recommended during pregnancy without professional guidance.

Low blood pressure

  • Both Arjuna and matcha may have mild blood pressure–lowering effects.
  • Use cautiously if you experience hypotension, dizziness, or lightheadedness.

Medication use (especially cardiovascular)

  • If you are taking medication for:
    • blood pressure
    • heart conditions
    • anticoagulation
consult a qualified professional before use, as herbs like Arjuna may influence cardiovascular function.

Sensitivity to caffeine

  • This recipe contains both coffee and matcha.
  • Avoid or reduce if you are sensitive to caffeine, experience anxiety, palpitations, or sleep disturbances.

Digestive sensitivity

  • Herbal powders can be slightly heavy or astringent for some individuals.
  • Start with lower amounts and observe your response.

Individual constitution (Ayurvedic perspective)

  • May be less suitable in:
    • strong pitta aggravation (heat, irritability)
    • high vāta sensitivity if taken without milk

Adjust accordingly (more milk, less coffee, more rose).

General guidance

Always start with small amounts and observe how your body responds. This preparation is best used as a supportive daily ritual, not as a therapeutic intervention.
